Chapter Twenty Two

I knew I’d slept for a while when my mouth tasted like the inside of a burst tire left out to rot by the side of the road for six months. I tried my best to ignore how I couldn’t stand my own tongue in my mouth when my mind caught up with recent events.

Apart from the trash bin of my mouth, I was nice and toasty warm in a soft bed made of clean sheets and I was fully naked. My brain stuttered at that piece of information on many levels. Who had undressed me? Who had put me inside the bed? Had I actually been clean enough for white sheets? And who had incinerated that dress?

I lifted my arm from beneath the covers, startled to find the wounds well on their way to healing and my skin soft as a lamb’s. The cuts were little more than red welts and the bruising around my wrists nothing but a faint yellow.

I wondered how I’d healed so quickly when I saw Henry asleep on the shallow window seat in front on billowing voile curtains. One leg was propped up, the other sagged to the ground. His back was really too large for the narrow space so he’d had to fold his arms across his front to fit.

Tasius was sprawled in a rocking chair in the corner, legs akimbo and sliding half off. I was glad there were no signs of his torture. Not on the outside, anyway.

Drizen looked contented enough flat-out on his back on top of the covers next to me. The bed was so large that all of his body fit well next to mine.

Each of them looked like they needed a nice shower, shave and a change of clothing. I wondered why they hadn’t already. Maybe the lady and man had limited resources and I’d used all of them. Knowing I’d landed unexpectedly on them, I’d make sure to try and make it up.

The sun was well and truly up and the room was a little stifling beneath the covers. There was also an uncomfortable pressure in my bladder that needed my immediate attention.

I leveraged myself up onto my elbows, ignoring tight muscles and lack of strength. I felt like I’d been bulldozed and put back together. With super glue. By a five-year-old. With no opposable thumbs.

Drizen’s eyes snapped open and he sat up, instantly awake. “Cho…Cindy, let me help you lie down.”

He sounded so worried that I sent him a smile to calm him down. “I’m trying to get up. I have urgent business I need to attend to.” Funny how talking could make a mouth taste even worse. “Come to think of it, you don’t have any water, do you?”

A cup was placed straight beneath my nose. Henry knelt in front of me, his intense eyes not missing anything. “Here, have this.”

“Thank you.” I accepted the cup, feeling more than a little self-conscious, considering my penchant for really bad morning breath and the small fact I hadn’t showered in however long.
